VP of Engineering - startup
Untitled 1VP of Engineering - Startup Location is midtown Manhattan We're looking for a VP of Engineering for a consumer email service startup with a compelling offering. As VP of Engineering, you’ll take charge of an existing code base comprising homegrown and third-party Python and JavaScript libraries on a foundation of Linux-based technologies and PostgreSQL. You’ll build a team that can evolve the existing product and quickly expand it to comprise new features in response to internal and external feedback. To be successful, you’ll need: - Startup experience. This is a startup environment. You’ll sprint for long distances while zigzagging as you learn with each step.
- Experience as a startup CTO, VP of Engineering, or lead of a team.
- Experience in hiring – and developing – team members to shape a successful team is required.
- Leadership. You should be able to build an entire LAMP-based Web site on your own, but be smart enough to delegate and experienced enough to do it effectively.
- Hunger for big results. You and your team will have stock options, and it’ll be your job to make them valuable. You should have a hunger for new ideas: combing the Web looking for new libraries to try, new projects to play with, and new products to save you time.
This position is only for serious, experienced, technical leaders with an entrepreneurial spirit. You must think in services, be able to invent it here, but also be wide open to adopting others’ ideas, techniques, and code. Speed and efficiency are critical, and you must have the chops to sidestep rookie mistakes in your sleep. If you’ve always been the smartest person in your group --- you’ve joined projects midstream and quickly became the local authority – then this may be the fit for you. More than most jobs, communication is key here. You must be able to explain your views clearly, to audiences of all technical levels. You must be able to provide constructive feedback to your peers, without condescending or insulting. Wallflowers are not going to fit. Jerks are not welcome. The job is in midtown NYC. You’ll be paid what you’re worth, and you’ll get options, to boot.
